On September 22, 2011 the United States Mint will release the sixth numismatic coin (NP6) of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion series designed for coin collectors.
The 2011-P Gettysburg National Military Park 5 oz Uncirculated Coin will be the first coin in the series which celebrates a military Park. While the bullion version was available for sale by dealers a number of months ago, this version is the "P" mint marked coin.
The Gettysburg National Military Park 5 ounce silver coin carries an image of the Civil War battleground on its reverse side. The Soldiers National Monument is pictured in the center and foreground of the image. This monument stands in the center of the Soldiers National Cemetery, Located in The state of Pennsylvania. 6000 American soldiers lost their lives in July of 1863, on the land where this monument was constructed.
While the 2010 coins in the series, carried a maximum mintage of 27,000 coins, the 2011 silver coins will be bumped to a mintage limit of 35,000 coins. Also, as of this writing, the Mint will allow a limit of five coins to be sold per household from the first day of sales. The 2010 coins had a limit of one per household sold. On some 2010 coins this limit was raised to five per household after a number of days of not selling out at the Mint.
The price will stay the same at $279.95 per coin. Silver prices have been fluctuating between the high $30 and low $40 range in the last few months. This puts the premium of these numismatic coins currently at around $80 above spot silver. The regular bullion versions generally sell for around two bucks per ounce over spot, or $10 for the 5 ounce coin.
Sales were brisk for the first coin in the series; the 2010-P Hot Springs 5 ounce uncirculated coin. Gradually however, sales have slowed down for the series. Currently the first four coins have sold out of their 27,000 mintage limit, with the Mount Hood 2010-P coin still for sale.
The United States Mint is not legally required to produce these numismatic versions. If sales continue to slide, it's possible they could cancel the "P" versions of the series. That would be great for current collectors. It's still too early to tell, but will be something to think about and watch in the future.
